Painting this piece was the highlight of the summer of 2022 begun on one of our Western Mass Hilltown Plein Air Painters adventures to Smith College. I was particularly excited about painting in the Smith College Botanic Garden because it is a place that I have known since I was ten years old. When I taught at the Williston Northampton School, I used to bring my students to the Lyman Plant House to draw. Prep school life can be rushed, pressure filled and stressful on faculty and students alike. To take time out and spend a day meditatively drawing can be cathartic. When we arrived at the garden to paint, the background spire was glowing, and it was one of those perfect June days that makes the heart sing. It was only after finishing the piece that I realized that I had been painting the spire of the church where one of my cousins was married. It was then that I realized that the title needed to be Sacred Places.
